Iron wheels dominate this picture of an old farm implement, their spokes and rims gone orange and flaky with rust. The machine appears to have been left out in the weather for years, and that exposure is part of its story: the wheels that once carried heavy loads across fields now sit frozen in place. Implements like this were common on American farms before tractors became standard, often pulled by teams of horses or mules. Pieces of equipment that survive in this condition show how quickly agricultural tools were replaced as mechanization spread through the twentieth century.
