Nettles crowd the foreground of this picture, half-hiding a blue tractor that has been left to rust where it stopped working. The machine's faded paint and corroded body suggest years of weather and neglect, the kind of slow abandonment common on farms after a tractor is replaced by a newer model or the land is no longer worked. Early tractors of this sort, many built in the first half of the twentieth century, transformed farm labor by replacing horses and hand tools, so a derelict example like this one carries a quiet record of that shift. Look at how the nettles soften the hard lines of the metal.
