Ships from Cuba and the United States share the frame in this view of the North River, the name New Yorkers used for the Hudson where it runs along Manhattan's piers. The glass negative belongs to the George Grantham Bain Collection, the work of the Bain News Service, a commercial agency that sold news pictures to newspapers in the early twentieth century. Bain's staff recorded shipping, waterfront life and city events, and steamers linking New York with Cuba were a common sight on the river. The title comes from caption cards that the service attached to its negatives and has not been independently verified, so the identities of the vessels should be read with that caution.
