Ourmiah, the northwestern Iranian town now usually spelled Urmia, is the place named in this glass negative, which shows a shah's arrival there. The picture comes from the George Grantham Bain Collection, the glass plates of the Bain News Service, a New York agency that supplied news photographs to newspapers in the early twentieth century. The record gives no firm date, and its title rests on unverified caption information, so the particular shah and occasion remain open to question. Visits by rulers drew crowds and local notice in this regional center near the lake of the same name.
