Few symbols were more useful to the federal government in 1917 than the Statue of Liberty, which this poster uses to urge Americans to buy $10 Liberty Loan certificates. The United States entered the First World War in April 1917, and the Treasury financed the war through a series of bond drives, the Liberty Loans, sold to ordinary citizens as well as to banks and wealthy investors. Color lithographs like this one were displayed in public places to make the appeal, and the modest $10 denomination invited people of limited means to take part.
