Few photographs from the Mexican Revolution show its violence as bluntly as this one, whose title describes a trench being filled with dead Federal soldiers. "Federals" refers to the army loyal to Victoriano Huerta's government, which fought revolutionary forces across northern and central Mexico during 1913 and 1914. The details come from an unverified caption card, and battlefield photographs of this period were sometimes arranged for the camera, so the scene may not match its title exactly. Even so, it offers a grim glimpse of how the war's dead were handled in the field.
