Stereograph cards like this one, produced by the Keystone View Company, were sold for home viewers that gave a three-dimensional effect, and this card shows burial work in the trenches of France during the First World War. Removing the dead from trench lines was grim, unending labor, since fighting on the Western Front left bodies in no-man's-land and in the earthworks for long periods, and clearing them was a constant burden on soldiers and burial details. The card's date, given as c1919, falls after the armistice, when many such scenes were photographed and published as part of the war's record. The catalog data is marked as unverified, so the exact site and circumstances are not confirmed.
