Printed as a package label for "The National Tobacco," a dark, sweet variety, this color lithograph dates to about 1868, when manufacturers relied on eye-catching printed wrappers to set their brands apart on crowded store shelves. Hatch & Co. of New York produced the design, and the copyright notice credits Jno. A. Webb, reflecting the registration of designs and trademarks that grew common in the years after the Civil War. Labels like this one were usually made by stone lithography, a process that allowed bold color and fine detail at modest cost.
