The title on this glass negative names the USS Brooklyn, a steel armored cruiser commissioned in 1896 and named for the city of Brooklyn, New York. The ship fought at the Battle of Santiago de Cuba during the Spanish-American War in 1898, and it became a familiar sight in New York harbor and at the Brooklyn Navy Yard. The record notes that the title comes from caption cards written by the Bain News Service and has not been independently verified, and the record gives no date. The Bain Collection as a whole mostly dates from the early 1900s, so the image likely belongs to that period. The Bain negatives are valued for documenting daily life and public events in that era.
