This glass negative shows Marshal Joseph Joffre, the French commander who led his army to victory at the First Battle of the Marne in 1914, in Brooklyn. Its title comes from Bain News Service notes that the record itself describes as unverified, so the exact occasion and date remain uncertain. Joffre headed a French military mission to the United States in the spring of 1917, shortly after America entered the First World War, and his visits drew large crowds in New York and its neighboring boroughs. The Bain News Service, a New York photo agency, produced most of the glass negatives in this collection, and its work offers a useful record of wartime public life in the city.
