The U.S. Capitol sits on Capitol Hill at the east end of the National Mall, and its dome and wings have anchored the city's skyline since the building was first occupied by Congress in 1800. Construction began in 1793 under the design of William Thornton, with later work by Benjamin Latrobe and Charles Bulfinch, and the building was burned by British troops in 1814 before being rebuilt. Its cast-iron dome, completed during the Civil War, is worth a second look for the statue of Freedom crowning its peak.
