Theodore Roosevelt sat for this 1905 portrait by a photographer named Rice, whose name appears on the original caption card. Roosevelt was in his second year as president then, having taken office after William McKinley's assassination in 1901 and won his own full term in 1904. The record itself is thin and its details come from an old caption, so the sitting date and studio attribution should be read with some caution. Still, the image captures the energetic, forward-leaning public face Roosevelt cultivated, a style that helped make presidential portraiture a tool of personal image-building in the early twentieth century.
