Two plump cherubs hoist a wicker basket heaped with roses, a motif that drew heavily on Baroque painting and its sweeping, celebratory vision of heavenly figures. Angels of this kind, nude or lightly draped and often shown as children, appeared on altarpieces, ceilings and devotional prints from the 1600s onward, where they signaled the presence of the divine in an otherwise earthly scene. Roses carried connotations of love, purity and the Virgin Mary, so a basket of them could read as both decorative abundance and quiet piety. The pairing of playful bodies with solemn symbolism is worth noticing, as is the way the figures seem to lift the flowers toward the viewer.
