The title names an exhibition of "Kriegsbilder," or war pictures, held at the Künstlerhaus, the Vienna artists' association building on the Karlsplatz. Venues like this one hosted shows where painters and printmakers responded to the fighting, and posters advertised them across the city. The date, 1918, falls in the last months of the war, when the Habsburg monarchy was close to collapse and Vienna faced serious shortages of food and fuel. An exhibition on this theme in that year reflects a public still absorbing four years of conflict.
