Seated and facing the camera in a full-length view, Dr. Samuel Alexander Mudd appears as a Charles County, Maryland, physician, yet his name is bound up with Abraham Lincoln's assassination. In April 1865, days after John Wilkes Booth shot the president at Ford's theater, Mudd set the broken leg of the fleeing Booth at his farmhouse. Mudd was convicted as a conspirator, imprisoned at Fort Jefferson in the Dry Tortugas, and pardoned by President Andrew Johnson in 1869. This 1959 print was made from an earlier photograph, so it shows Mudd's appearance rather than a specific moment in the case.
