Women washing clothes in a river near Guantanamo is the particular scene here, a daily labor that stereograph makers of the late 1890s liked to show as a glimpse of everyday life in newly occupied Cuba. The card was issued by Strohmeyer & Wyman, a New York firm that sold stereo views to home parlors, which were viewed through a binocular viewer to produce a three-dimensional effect. Laundering in rivers was common across the island, and photographers from the United States, often following the Spanish-American War, captured such scenes as picturesque records of local life. The record's details are old and unverified, so the exact site and date remain less certain than the card's general character.
