Crowds filled the streets of New York in November 1960 to greet Richard M. Nixon with a ticker tape parade, an honor usually reserved for returning war heroes, astronauts and visiting dignitaries. Paper strips from stock-market tickers drifted down from the office windows of lower Manhattan as the Republican candidate passed. Nixon lost his bid for the presidency to John F. Kennedy that same month, and Toni Frissell's photograph preserves the energy of a campaign that ended in a narrow result.
