This 1883 color poster advertised the Christmas number of *Harper's Magazine*, the New York monthly published by Harper & Brothers. Holiday issues were a major event for American magazines in the 1880s, and publishers used lavish color imagery to draw buyers to newsstands and bookstores. Color lithography had become far more affordable by this time, which made large chromolithographic posters like this one practical. Its bright palette and seasonal theme show how the magazine trade used visual display to sell the holiday season.
