Edward Penfield's poster for *Harper's Christmas*, printed by Harper & Brothers in New York in 1897, promoted the publisher's holiday issue. Penfield was one of the leading American poster artists of the 1890s, and his magazine posters for Harper's helped establish that form as a distinct kind of graphic art. His bold flat color and simplified shapes drew on European poster design and Japanese prints. The record lists reading as the subject, a fitting theme for a season when families often shared books and magazines.
