Edward Penfield's 1897 lithograph advertises Harper's Christmas, the holiday issue of the Harper & Brothers publishing house in New York. Penfield was one of the leading poster artists of the 1890s, and his work for Harper's helped establish the flat, bold color and clean lettering that defined American magazine posters of the period. Posters like this one were designed to be read quickly from across a street, so the image relies on a few strong shapes rather than fine detail. The subject of reading, which the record lists, ties the piece to the magazine's core purpose.
