Santa Claus is the figure this card centers on, shown in the familiar red suit and white beard that became standard in American and European Christmas imagery through the late 1800s. Images like this one drew on earlier pictures of St. Nicholas and on Clement Clarke Moore's 1823 poem "A Visit from St. Nicholas," which helped shape the sleigh, reindeer and chimney-visit traditions. Holiday cards of this kind were widely mailed and collected in the decades around 1900, when color printing made bright, sentimental scenes affordable for ordinary households.
