Hermann Göring, the Reich air minister, examines a scale model of Tempelhof Airport in this photograph from December 4, 1937. The model reflects the Nazi government's plans to rebuild Berlin on a monumental scale, with Tempelhof meant to play a major part. Its new terminal, designed by architect Ernst Sagebiel and begun in 1936, was among the largest buildings in the world when finished, with a long curved facade intended to project national power. Images like this one show how the regime used aviation and architecture to advertise its ambitions.
