Dated September 11, 1926, this photograph is one of many fashion images in the George Grantham Bain Collection, the New York photo service that supplied news pictures to newspapers in the early twentieth century. The caption card labels it simply "Fashion," so the models and the specific garments are not identified, and the record notes that its details are unverified. Mid-1920s dress favored the drop waist, shorter hemlines, and close-fitting cloche hats, and press photographs like this one helped spread those styles to readers beyond the cities where they began. Looking closely at the cut of the dresses and the accessories can show how quickly fashion moved from the salon to the printed page.
