Dated June 11, 1920, this print is one of the Bain News Service's fashion pictures, identified by its catalog number, 5203-8, and a caption card that reads only "Fashion." The Bain agency, founded in New York by George Grantham Bain in 1899, sold news and feature photographs to newspapers, and its fashion images from this period often show the shifts of the early 1920s, when hemlines rose and loose, straight-cut dresses were replacing the corseted silhouettes of the prewar years. The record does not name the models or the garments, so the image is best read as a record of postwar style and of how commercial photographers presented clothing to the public.
