This March 1918 view of women modeling clothing was made in the last months of the First World War, when fashion coverage in American newspapers and magazines often reflected wartime conditions. Bain News Service, the New York agency whose founder, George Grantham Bain, built a large store of news photographs, supplied images like this to newspapers across the country. Its caption card lists only "Fashion," so the specific garments and designers are not recorded. Wartime shortages of cloth and labor pushed many American styles toward simpler lines and less material, a shift worth keeping in mind when looking at the outfits.
