Despite its title, this view has nothing to do with Arizona. The "Grand Canyon" here is a nickname for Elk Canyon in the Black Hills of western South Dakota, where a railroad line runs along the rocky cut. The photograph dates to 1890, the year after South Dakota became a state, and it was deposited for copyright, a step photographers took to protect their work. It belongs to the John C. H. Grabill Collection, and Grabill, who worked in the Black Hills, recorded the region's scenery and settlements. Notice how the tracks thread the narrow canyon floor, a reminder of how railways opened remote hill country to travel and trade.
