The title, which reads "Höllenkampf an der Aisne" ("Hell's Struggle on the Aisne"), points to the river valley in northern France where German and Allied armies fought from September 1914, and where the front soon hardened into trench lines. This color lithograph by H.R. Erdt, a German poster designer, is dated 1918, four years after that battle, so it looks back on the fighting rather than reporting it as news. Posters of this kind were printed in large runs to stir patriotism and steady morale on the home front late in the war. Its size, about 141 by 95 centimeters, suggests it was meant for street walls and public billboards.
