Titled "Die grosse Schlacht in Frankreich," this 1918 German color lithograph links the war on the Western Front to Paul von Hindenburg, the field marshal whose name was tied to Germany's war effort by that point. Hindenburg served as chief of the General Staff, and the poster appeared as Germany launched its spring offensive in France that March, an attempt to break the stalemate before large numbers of American troops arrived. Designed by H.R. Erdt, the sheet reflects the wartime morale campaigns of the period, when posters like this were displayed publicly to rally support for the fighting.
