The "federal pillars" are a set of three woodcuts that ran in the *Massachusetts Centinel*, a Boston newspaper, in its issues of January 16, June 11, and August 2, 1788. Their subject is the columns of a classical structure, a common emblem of the time for the states supporting a united government. The year 1788 was when the proposed U.S. Constitution moved through state ratifying conventions, and Massachusetts had approved it in February. Printed in a newspaper rather than as a standalone sheet, the designs reached readers as part of the public debate over whether the states would form a stronger national union.
