Two Loening amphibians are shown together, a pairing that set this photograph apart from the ordinary aircraft portrait. Grover Loening's company built the OA-1, an observation amphibian that could operate from both land and water, which made it useful for military patrols over coastlines and harbors. The record dates the print to the 1920s, a period when aviation designers were still working out how to combine a boat hull with landing gear. Looking at the two machines side by side shows how those early compromises shaped the look of the airplane.
