Blanche Walsh, the American stage actress, is shown here in costume for the title role of Trilby, the character drawn from George du Maurier's 1894 novel about a Parisian artist's model who falls under the spell of the hypnotist Svengali. The stage adaptation was enormously popular in the 1890s, and Walsh's portrayal of the role made her one of the better-known actresses of the period. The photograph was made by B.J. Falk, a New York portrait photographer whose studio was known for theatrical sitters, and it captures the fashion and studio staging typical of celebrity portraits of the mid-1890s.
