The title gives the subject's Lakota name, Ta-ton-ka-I-yo-tan-ka, a spelling of Tatanka Iyotake, the name by which Sitting Bull, the Hunkpapa Lakota leader, was known among his people. He became one of the most prominent Native leaders resisting the U.S. government's push onto Lakota lands in the 1870s, and he was a central figure in the events leading to the 1876 fight along the Little Bighorn. The record dates the original portrait between 1860 and 1880, while this gelatin silver print was made in 1963 by the Miller Studio in Pierre, South Dakota, so it is a later reproduction of an earlier image.
