Mardi Gras in New Orleans has long been built around its parades, and this 1913 view captures one of the city's krewe processions in the Rex tradition. Rex, founded in 1872, staged its first organized parade in 1872 and became the template for the city's elaborate float-and-costume processions that still draw crowds each carnival season. Parades of this era featured horse-drawn and early motorized floats, masked riders in elaborate costume, and crowds lining the route on neighborhood streets. The photograph offers a snapshot of a tradition that was already well established by the early twentieth century.
