This panoramic print, measuring 11 by 39 inches, stretches the New York waterfront across a single wide sweep, a format that set it apart from ordinary street and building photographs of the time. It was deposited for copyright on October 20, 1902, by Irving Underhill, whose claim lists an address in New York City. Silver printing-out paper produced its image through direct exposure to light rather than chemical development, which gives such prints a soft, silvery tone. Waterfront views like this one recorded a city growing upward and outward at the turn of the century.
