Joséphine, the first wife of Napoleon I, is the sitter in this engraving, which was issued under the name Redfield, New York. Born in Martinique in 1763 as Marie Josèphe Rose Tascher de La Pagerie, she married Napoleon in 1796 and was crowned empress in 1804, but the marriage was dissolved in 1809 because it had produced no heir. Portraits of her circulated widely in the nineteenth century, and prints like this one helped carry her Empire-era image to American audiences long after her death in 1814.
