Arthur James Balfour, the British statesman who led Britain's wartime diplomatic mission to the United States in 1917, is the figure named in this view at the tomb of George Washington at Mount Vernon. The National Photo Company, a Washington studio that documented official visitors and city life in the early twentieth century, made many pictures of dignitaries paying respects at the Virginia estate. The studio's title and the 1916 to 1917 date range are unverified, so the exact occasion is not fully confirmed. Faint streaks and blemishes from deterioration of the original coating are visible on the glass.
