The Golden Gate, the strait where San Francisco Bay meets the Pacific, is seen here with Mount Tamalpais rising across the water in Marin County. The strait's narrow opening was long the only route for ships entering and leaving the bay, and the bridge that spans it, completed in 1937, was built to connect the city with the north. Mount Tamalpais, at about 2,570 feet, has long been a landmark for sailors and local residents. Its view from the headlands helps explain why the scene has been so often photographed.
