The house at 1723 G Street in Washington is recorded here as the former home of Jefferson Davis, the Confederate president, who was born in 1808 and died in 1889. The photograph dates to about 1901, more than a decade after his death, so it shows the building as it looked to a later generation of residents and passersby. Its Washington setting ties it to the capital's Gilded Age streetscapes, when many of the city's older residences were being remembered in relation to the national figures who had lived in them. The picture was deposited for copyright registration, which is why a copyright office number appears in its record.
