McKeesport, Pennsylvania, in 1920 was a steel and tube town at the confluence of the Youghiogheny and Monongahela rivers, about 15 miles southeast of Pittsburgh. The National Tube Company, a U.S. Steel subsidiary, had made pipe there since the 1890s, and the mills drew large numbers of immigrant workers from Eastern and Southern Europe, giving the town a crowded, many-languaged working-class character. Snake Hollow, the valley named in the title, sat among the hillside neighborhoods where mill families lived close to the furnaces and smokestacks. The area's natural gas boom, which had lit factories and homes across the region since the 1880s, was already fading by 1920, though the name "Gas Belt" still described the district. This panorama shows a community whose fortunes rose and fell with the mills.
