Princess Victoria Louise of Prussia, the only daughter of Kaiser Wilhelm II, is the subject of this glass negative from the Bain News Service, a New York photo agency that supplied pictures to newspapers in the early twentieth century. The record gives the title only as unverified information from the negative or its caption card, and it lists no date, so the exact year of the exposure is unknown. Bain's files are valued today for documenting visiting royalty, political figures and public events in the years before and around the First World War, when American papers had a strong appetite for images of European aristocracy. Its small glass plate format was the standard working medium of news photographers of that era.
