Louise Scott Garland is a named sitter in this glass negative, a small format of 5 by 7 inches or less. The Library of Congress catalogs it as part of the George Grantham Bain Collection, and the name comes from caption cards and negative markings that the Bain News Service wrote, which the library has not independently verified. Bain, a New York photographer, built a news picture agency in the early 1900s that supplied portraits and news photographs to newspapers, so the collection captures a busy American press world before wire photos became common. Because the record gives no date, the picture is best understood through the agency's working practices and the glass-plate technology of its era.
