The Hospital of the New York Women's League for Animals was a clinic for sick and injured animals, most likely dogs, cats, and horses, at a time when New York still moved heavily by horse-drawn wagon and carriage. The Bain News Service, a New York press photo agency active in the early twentieth century, made the glass negative, and its caption cards are the source of the title. The record gives no date, so the picture is best understood through its period, when animal welfare groups were gaining public support in American cities and charity hospitals offered free or low-cost care to working animals.
