Princess Ileana of Romania, the daughter of King Ferdinand and Queen Marie, is the subject named in this glass negative, though the Library of Congress notes that the title comes from unverified caption data kept with the Bain News Service negatives. The Bain agency, which operated in New York in the early twentieth century, specialized in news pictures of public figures, including visiting royalty and society personalities, and its glass plates were often sent to newspapers the same day. Because the record gives no date, the exact occasion is unknown, but the negative reflects the wide interest American audiences then took in European royal families.
