Few details survive about the woman in this small sixth-plate daguerreotype, catalogued only as an elderly sitter in a cap. The plate carries a hallmark recorded as Rinhart 42, while the photographer remains unidentified. Made sometime between 1849 and 1860, when daguerreotypes were among the most common portraits in America, it is a one-of-a-kind direct positive on silver-coated copper, so the image looks like a mirror and shifts in tone as the viewing angle changes.
