An 1844 daguerreotype of a seated elderly woman in a white cap and dark dress, a portrait from the very first years of photography. Daguerreotypes were made on silver-plated copper sheets, and each one is a single, mirror-like image that can only be seen clearly at certain angles. Exposures at the time often ran several minutes, so sitters had to hold still, which explains the composed, serious expressions common in portraits of this period. The record does not name the sitter, but the image is a rare glimpse of ordinary domestic life captured in the medium's earliest decade.
