A seated couple in Eastern dress, one of them holding a hookah, makes this image stand out among the daguerreotypes on the board, where the subject matter is often Western portraiture. Around 1850 the daguerreotype was the dominant photographic process, and it produced a single, mirror-like image on a silvered copper plate that had to be viewed at an angle to be seen properly. Studio photographers of the period frequently staged figures in costume and props drawn from travel accounts, orientalist painting and imported textiles, so such pictures tell us as much about European fascination with the East as about the sitters themselves. The record does not name the people pictured, so the image is best read as a studio tableau of its era.
