This March 1937 sitting captures George Gershwin only a few months before his death that July at age 38. Carl Van Vechten, the writer and photographer known for his portraits of performers, writers and artists, made the gelatin silver print, which is catalogued among his celebrity portraits at the Library of Congress. Gershwin was then at the height of his fame, having written *Rhapsody in Blue* and the opera *Porgy and Bess*, which made him one of the most recognized American composers of his day. The print is one of many Van Vechten made of leading figures in music, theater and literature, and it preserves how Gershwin presented himself near the end of his career.
