The Jefferson theater stood on Free Street, opposite Oak Street, in Portland, Maine, and this ink drawing from 1929 records its design. It dates from the years when movies were shifting from silent films to talkies and theaters were being built larger and more elaborate in cities across the country. Working plans like this one were documents for architects and builders, so they show how a house was laid out for crowds, screens and stage space rather than how the public saw it. Held by the Library of Congress, it is a useful record of Portland's downtown entertainment district in that decade.
