The State theater and Congress Building stood at the corner of Congress and High Streets in downtown Portland, Maine, and this 1930 ink drawing records the project on paper as its design took shape. The site sat on Congress Street, the city's main commercial thoroughfare, where movie houses of the late 1920s often shared a block with offices and shops. Palaces like this one were built to draw crowds with grand interiors, and combining a theater with a commercial building shows how such houses became anchors of city life. The drawing is useful for seeing how the architects planned the building's street presence before construction.
