Waseda University's baseball team, on its way to the United States, is shown here during its stop in Honolulu in 1911. Japanese university teams were then building a reputation in baseball, and the Pacific crossing made Honolulu a natural halfway point, where Hawaii's large Japanese community often welcomed visiting teams. The photograph came from the Bain News Service, a New York agency that distributed news pictures to newspapers, so it was made to be published and reflects how such trips were presented to the public at the time.
